Effective teaching requires more than good planning and instructional design. It also requires attention to the social and cultural dimensions of the classroom in which those plans and designs are to be carried out.  This is particularly important as we think about the future of learning.  For new content, new technologies, and new methods to take hold, they must be fostered within a meaningful and receptive context. Since understanding of new content and use of new technologies can only be developed through concentrated thought and engagement with ideas, a classroom culture that supports and encourages this challenging and difficult work must be cultivated. Such environments not only aid the development of understanding, they also cultivate students’ dispositions toward thinking and provide them with the tools needed to learn, discover, and solve problems in the future. Through analysis of our personal experience and classroom video cases, this session will explore what it means to have and create a culture of thinking in the classroom or school.
