This presentation explores a curriculum that helps to build student awareness of design fundamentals through the use of historic models. Participants will learn how students begin with projects focusing on the use of figure ground relationships and simple color theory using tangrams as the starting point. Fractals provide the opportunity to examine the intricate order witnessed in nature and space and students may interpret this order in abstract designs. The final unit of this course will explore the inherent beauty of the Greek Golden Rectangle and observe it’s use in architecture and the fine arts. Students will create works of art that employ the use of the golden rectangle. Parameters for projects include measuring borders, finding a central axis, creating radial balance and a host of other design criteria that cross over into the realm of science.
